The Ministry of Health, after conducting epidemiological investigations for an outbreak of gastroenteritis in María Gran (Department Paraná), determined the agent that caused the appearance of cases above usual. It is about Norovirus, which is very frequent in the population.
The team of the Epidemiology Department, dependent on the Ministry of Health Entre Rius, undertook epidemiological research in María Gran to determine, in recent weeks, the cause of the outbreak of gastroenteritis that affected the Almost 30 percent of the local population according to the estimates that arose from the field study.
After taking samples of fecal matter for analysis and detection of viruses and bacteria, the result was that the outbreak was produced by a virus called Norovirus, which is transmitted by consumption of contaminated water or food , and / or contact person to person. In addition, the study was completed with water samples, which were analyzed by the municipality, located 64 kilometers from Paraná.
In this sense, the director of Epidemiology, Diego Garcilazo, said: "The team from the Epidemiological Surveillance Department was working on the site to determine the cause of the increase in the number of inquiries for gastroenteritis tables. More than 240 surveys were performed, and samples were taken for virological and bacteriological analysis. "
"It was confirmed in this way that the cases were given by a virus that is responsible for 50 percent of the outbreaks of gastroenteritis in general," said the professional. Norovirus infection appears with nausea, vomiting, liquid diarrhea and abdominal pain. However, there are asymptomatic cases. In general, these infections are benign, they evolve favorably in two or three days, "he stressed.
"During these weeks we were in dialogue with the director of the Francesc Castaldo hospital in the town of Entrerriana, Martín Ginestar, and with the municipal officials, in order to contain the great demand and know the situation. We can say that there There was a considerable decrease in the consultations, "said Garcilazo.
Recommendations for AVOID THE DISEASE
To prevent the proliferation of this type of virus in populations where it was confirmed that there are gastroenteritis outbreaks, the Ministry of Health reminded the population of the importance of consuming safe food and water.
Safe water is considered to be due to the fact that due to its conditions and treatment it does not contain germs or toxic substances that affect health. It can be obtained by using bleach (place 2 drops per liter of water, 3 drops per liter and a half, and 6 drops per three liters, leaving for 30 minutes before consuming -the); or boil water for three minutes (from the appearance of bubbles, waiting for it to cool down for consumption).
It should be mentioned that, in addition, you must keep the water after returning it safe. "It can be packed in clean and covered cans, better if they are made of plastic and with a beak," Garcilazo said. "Also, you need to deposit them away from the ground and outside the animals, and change the # 39 water regularly ".
PREVENTION OF DEHYDRATION
For those with symptoms of gastroenteritis and the condition of a health professional has been confirmed, from the health portfolio, they have pointed to the need to prevent dehydration.
It is important to maintain good hydration, especially during this summer season, given that diarrhea and vomiting cause excessive elimination of body fluids.
In some cases, water consumption must be supplemented with oral moisturizing salts. Finally, Garcilazo said: "The most vulnerable groups are young children and older adults. Breastfeeding is also essential to maintain hydration and prevent this type of picture from aggravating or prolonging."
