The misdemeanors have shot dead the candidate for Awami League president Nethoi Marma, 56, in the Chitmaram trade union elections in Kaptai upazila Rangmamati. The incident took place after noon on Saturday (October 18).

The president of the Awami League union was also assassinated Nethoi Marma. He was a candidate for the ship symbol proposed by the Awami League in the UP elections to be held on 11 November.

Kaptai Upazila Awami League president Angsuchhain Chowdhury and Rangamati district Awami League general Haji Musa Matabbar blamed the killers on Jana Sanghati Samiti (JSS), led by Santu Larma, on Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Ansuchain Chowdhury said he (Nethoi Marma) had been in the Upazila rest home for so long. Today he presented his candidacy and went to the area to meet with leaders and activists and their families. At night, a group of armed JSS terrorists arrived at his home and shot him dead. We strongly condemn and protest this incident.

He further said that after the assassination of two Juba League leaders in Chitmaram earlier, he (Nethoi) was staying in the rest home in Upazila Sadar. Today he submitted his candidacy and went home to consult with his family. But after 12pm on Saturday night, a group of about 14/15 armed terrorists broke down the door of his home in the Agapara area and shot him dead. This murder is undoubtedly the work of Jana Sanghati Samiti, of Santu Larma.

Haji Musa Matabbar, general secretary of the Awami League of Rangamati district, blamed the death of Jana Sanghati Samiti. He urged police agencies to ensure the safety of candidates from all unions in tourist districts in the upcoming union council elections.

The chief officer (OC) of Kaptai, Chandraghona police station, Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, confirmed the incident. The police go there. I will know the details when I go there.

However, it has not been possible to contact any of the leaders responsible for the CHT Jana Sanghati Samiti led by Santu Larma, who has been out of contact in recent times, to talk about the killings.
