A Belgian discovery allows us to understand why overweight people do not feel satiated. Simply because you eat too much fat, the intestine does not send this signal to the brain anymore. And so we will eat. An interesting discovery when we know that one in five Belgians is obese.
Researchers at the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain) have discovered that an intestinal enzyme allows fatty people to indicate to the brain "I stop, I'm not hungry anymore", as long as our metabolism works correctly. In the case of overweight or obese subjects, the message"I'm not hungry anymore"It's interrupted, which increases the absorption of fat and strengthens the vicious circle of obesity.
His research, published in the scientific journal Nature Communications, opens the way to new therapeutic perspectives against obesity.

The team of researchers, coordinated by Professor Patrice Cani (Leuven Drug Research Institute, UCLouvain), is the first to explain why a high-fat diet modifies the intestinal-brain, through the reduction of the activity of an enzyme (nape-PLD). "The body does not react correctly to this excessive fat intake, the appetite is no longer regulated and the subject grows", says Patrice Cani in a statement released Monday.
It is through the realization of experiments in mice that scientists have discovered the effects of this enzyme. Therefore, mice that no longer have this enzyme in the intestine develop a fatty liver, become obese and spend less energy. "If these mice (without this enzyme) are exposed to a high fat diet, they can not stop eating fatty foods and, therefore, eat more than normal mice that receive this same fatty food."explains the researchers.
In other words, without this enzyme or if it is less active as a result of fat intake, we lose the signals that inform the brain from stopping eating. Consequences: Let's eat more and spend less energy, so we grow up.
Leuven researchers have also shown that administering the Akkermansia bacteria (which reduces the effects of obesity and diabetes) on mice that have lost this enzyme, helps to restore the dialogue through the message "I stop, I'm not hungry anymore"and therefore, make them eat less.
