The coup d'état of 1964 preceded a period of military dictatorship in which there was no direct election to the president of Brazil. The National Congress was closed, the mandates were annulled and the censorship was reported to the press. According to the Truth Commission, 434 people were killed by the regime or disappeared – only 33 bodies were found.
The demonstrations occurred in the middle of the controversy surrounding the federal government after President Jair Bolsonaro ordered the Ministry of Defense to make "due celebrations" for 55 years of coup.
After the determination of the president, the Federal Justice of Brasilia prohibited, at the request of the Public Defender of the Union, that the coup d'état be celebrated by the Armed Forces. Nevertheless, another decision, also of the Federal Court, sent the celebrations.
