THOUSANDS over 40 years old have used a free national health check that could reduce the risk of dementia.
Only half of the 15 million eligible people have taken the 20-minute test, according to England's NHS.
The test also projects heart problems, kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.
Dementia and Alzheimer's disease were the leading cause of death in England and Wales in 2017, which account for about 13 percent of all deaths registered, according to the Statistics Office National.
Someone who has had a stroke, or has diabetes or heart disease, is about twice as likely to develop vascular dementia, according to the Alzheimer's Society.
"The beginning of a new year is exactly the right time to commit to a simple, free and potentially life-saving passage towards a healthier life," said Alistair Burns, national clinical director of dementia in England's NHS.
Everyone from 40 to 74 years of age without pre-existing health conditions is automatically eligible for the check, which happens every five years.
It is part of the NHS's goal in England to improve the early diagnosis of dementia.
Laura Phipps, head of communications at Alzheimer Research UK, said: "There is good evidence to suggest that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain, but while 77 percent think they can reduce The risk of heart disease, only 34% of people know that they can reduce the risk of dementia.
"Research shows that half life is a crucial moment to take measures that help keep a healthy brain in its later life. With dementia now the leading cause of death in the United Kingdom, we should encourage everyone to Take positive steps to maintain good brain health throughout your life and the elderly. "
