The "Roc" of Stratolaunch, the world's largest airplane, flew for the first time (updated)

Stratolaunch, the spatial launch company founded in part by the last billionaire and Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen, has sent its gigantic Roc to heaven for the first time. The flight took place this morning at 6:46 from Stratolaunch's house, in Mojave Air And Space Port, in California. He was chased by a Cessna Citation jet during the inaugural flight.

Roc now takes the throne as the largest airplane in the world with a 385-foot wingspan, a total weight of 1.300,000 pounds, and powered by six Pratt & Whitney PW4056 turbofan engines that are normally found 747-400. Combined, these engines made an impressive amount of 340,500 pounds. El Roc, nicknamed after the enormous bird of Greek mythology, will remove the useful loads of the rocket before sending them to the space. The idea is that crafts work as the first phase, completely reusable and flexible, which could dramatically reduce the cost of the payload in space and do so in a very flexible way that does not offer the traditional systems of launch

We have kept close vigilance about the program, which has seen its scope narrowed slightly after the death of its first financier and visionary Paul Allen. A whole family of space launch vehicles was meant to be a carrier of Roc, now that it has been paired with only one, at least for now. As we have explained in the past, the Pentagon is likely to be Stratolaunch's most lucrative and lucrative client.

Roc is still at the moment of publishing it. We will update this message with more information, as it is available on this exciting point of reference in the history of aviation.

UPDATE: 9:25 p.m. PDT-

Roc has safely landed at Mojave Air and Space Port. Congratulations Stratolaunch and all its partners to make a first success and make a first flight!
