A team of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -MIT-, headed by Spanish Tomas Palacios, managed to develop a technology that turns the Wi-Fi signal into electricity. This implies that there will be energy transmitted to dozens of meters and without cables: the battery of the mobiles can be recharged with the Wi-Fi signal and even the devices can be used without battery, powered by the aforementioned network.
So far, through this system, experts only achieved an electricity load of the order of 40 MW, starting with a 150 MW WiFi signal, which is very much far from being enough to load a mobile phone. What can be done is to turn on a screen or feed sensors. In any case, this is a very important first step where a new advanced material known as Molibdè disulfide comes into play.
This new technology allows you to capture a Wi-Fi signal, which has alternating current, and convert it to a continuous current through a special antenna called rectifier or rectifying antenna, which captures some electric microvats, enough to feed Some basic sensors, but not to load the cell phone or feed it. For its part, what Molibdè disulfide does, which is inexpensive to manufacture, is to allow continued electricity before the signal goes by.
If you think big, that is, placing a wall full of rectangles, these would be able to capture the electricity of radio signals that move through the air and feed lights or electronic devices of everything a house or office.
It also has many other implications that could improve medicine. For example, a patient could swallow a pill with one of these rectuses, and when in the stomach, activate with a Wi-Fi signal, to perform medical measurements.
While this system is under development and its possibilities are still unknown, we are talking about a large technological breakthrough that could improve the quality of life of human beings.
