The drug with anti-inflammatory effects colchicine also works in the treatment of covid-19 and reduces the risk of complications. This is clear from a study by doctors at the Montreal Cardiology Clinic in Canada, which reports tvnoviny.sk.
According to doctors, the results are a great scientific discovery, making colchicine the first orally administered drug in the world that can be used to treat patients with covid-19 whose condition does not require hospitalization.
The use of colchicine, which is used primarily to treat gout and joint disease, has reduced the risk of death or hospitalization for people with covid-19 by up to 21 percent, according to the study.
The study was conducted in Canada, the US, Europe and South America and involved 4,488 people with covid. Patients were not hospitalized at the time of the study and had at least one risk factor that could lead to a worsening of the disease.
In 4,159 of them, colchicine reduced the risk of hospitalization by 25%, the need for pulmonary ventilation by 50% and the risk of death by up to 44%. “We are pleased to finally offer the world’s first oral drug, the use of which could have a significant impact on public health and potentially prevent complications associated with covid-19 in millions of patients,” said Jean-Claude Tardif, head of research.
