Increased tax on sweetened drinks

The government announced: there will be no new taxes, but there will be an exception. An exception to the famous tax on sweet products. And for good reason, the number of diabetics continues to increase from year to year in French Polynesia where 45,000 people suffer from type 2 diabetes.

On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, on Wednesday, November 14, health services caused a cry of alarm. On January 1, the Minister of Health, Jackues Rainal, announced that tax on sweet drinks and products containing hidden sugars will increase by 25% on January 1 next year.

The money from these taxes will be especially intended for the implementation of preventive actions. "This taxation will be assigned directly to a separate account, will be disposed of in the joint budget of Polynesia"says Teva Rohfritsch, vice president.
