Many people complain of Long Covid symptoms after a crown infection. Now researchers want to have discovered a connection to the Epstein-Barr virus.
Frankfurt: More than 95% of the world’s healthy adults are infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The virus usually sleeps in the body and goes unnoticed. But illness, stress, and other factors can reactivate the infection and trigger Pfeiffer’s glandular fever. Researchers have found that EBV is active in most people after they have been infected with the coronavirus. Has the long-coveted riddle been solved?
There were already signs of a connection between the Epstein-Barr virus and Corona in a study at Wuhan’s Renmin Hospital, where the coronavirus exploded in late 2019 according to the current state of knowledge. Based on the observations of the Chinese research team, US and Turkish researchers have now investigated the relationship between the viruses, under the direction of Jeffrey Gold of the World Organization.
Covid’s long-term symptoms are reminiscent of diseases caused by the Epstein-Barr virus
“We have observed that many of the symptoms attributed to Long-Covid are very similar to those associated with VEB reactivation,” the researchers wrote in the published study. The list of Long Covid symptoms is long. Respondents gave about 200 different signs of illness in an Internet survey. Those affected report the following complaints, among others:
- Difficulty concentrating
- “Brain Mist”
- Memory problems
- Disorders in finding words
- Loss of taste and smell
- sleep disorders
- Joint and muscle discomfort
In the new study, the team tested 185 people infected with Corona and who have since suffered from Long Covid. The result: Nearly 30% of people surveyed at random also showed symptoms 30 days after infection, so they complained about Long-Covid. When the scientists examined blood samples from these participants, they found that 66.7% had an EBV infection, which was reactivated. In people without Long Covid, reactivated Epstein-Barr virus was only detected in ten percent of all cases.
Long Covid: What role does the Epstein-Barr virus play?
According to the results of the study, Gold and his team assume that coronavirus infection can trigger a reactivation of the Epstein-Barr virus. “These results suggest that many of the symptoms of Long Covid may not be directly attributable to the Sars-CoV-2 virus, but to a reactivation of the VEB triggered by Covid-19,” the scientists concluded.
Because the symptoms of the two viruses are so similar, researchers suspect the Epstein-Barr virus is behind some of the Long Covid cases. “Even if reactivation of EBV will not be responsible for all cases of recurrent fatigue or brain fog after Covid-19, the data indicate that it plays a role in many or perhaps even in most cases of Long-Covid “
Connection between Epstein-Barr and Corona: useful study for research
Although the study with 185 respondents is very small, it could still be useful for scientists investigating the Crown. Knowledge of the connections between Sars-CoV-2 and EBV reactivation creates new possibilities for Long-Covid diagnosis and possible therapies, according to the Turkish-American research team. “We believe it would be advisable to determine whether patients with a positive crown show signs of reactivation of the VEB,” the study says.
There is no direct vaccination or treatment for Epstein-Barr virus. Ärtz: Inside, if Pfeiffer’s glandular fever breaks out, all they can do is relieve the symptoms. Ibuprofen or paracetamol can be helpful for mild illnesses, while medical professionals use the active ingredients ganciclovir or acyclovir to prevent the virus from multiplying in the body.
The former BVB player suffers from Long Covid, also diagnosed with the Epstein-Barr virus
There is increasing evidence that there is a link between viruses. For example, former Borussia Dortmund professional Marco Stiepermann had to terminate his contract with an English football club due to Long Covid. “In the high tension phase during the games and training, I continued to feel dizzy. For half a year I didn’t know what was happening to me and no one could help me, ”Stiepermann said in an interview with Sport Bild. In late 2020, he was diagnosed with the Epstein-Barr virus.
“And doctors assume I also suffer from a long covidi, the long-term consequences of a crown infection,” the 30-year-old said. Again and again he suffered from severe headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. (Tim Vincent Dicke)
