Vice President of the Commission on Eradicating Corruption said former Social Affairs Minister Juliari Batubara could be sentenced to death.

YOGYAKARTA, KOMPAS.com- Alexander Marwata, vice chairman of the Commission on the Eradication of Corruption (KPK), stated that former Social Minister Juliari Batubara could be charged with the death penalty for alleged involvement in social assistance corruption for residents affected by Covid-19.

The reason is that there are rules that threaten perpetrators of corruption during a disaster with the death penalty.

“The death penalty is regulated through the Law on the Eradication of Corruption, especially in Article 2, corruption in a state of disaster and in a state of war,” said Alexander Marwata, after coordinating eradication of corruption (prevention) with the governor of Yogyakarta, in Gedhong Pracimasono, Kepatihan complex., Yogyakarta City, Thursday (18/2/2021).

However, Alexander has not confirmed that the KPK prosecutor will charge Juliari with the death penalty.

According to him, there are several things to keep in mind before taking action.

“Of course, we will see to what extent the urgency of dictating the death penalty. It is possible, but not all cases of corruption (are sentenced to death),” he said.

Deputy Minister of Justice and Human Rights Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej had previously requested the death penalty.

Edward even said that the former Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Edhy Prabowo, is worth it.

This was conveyed by Eddy Hiariej, the greeting of the Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights, when he spoke at a national seminar entitled “Critical analysis of the direction of training and law enforcement in the pandemic era” which was broadcast online on the YouTube account of the Faculty of Law of the UGM, Tuesday (02/02/2021).

“The two former ministers (Edhy Prabowo and Juliari Batubara) committed acts of corruption that were later exposed in the KPK OTT. For me they deserve to be prosecuted under Article 2, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Law on Corruption (Tipikor) , which counts to the death penalty, “Eddy said Tribunnews.com, Tuesday.

In addition, this corruption is carried out by taking advantage of the positions they hold as ministers.

“So these two are heavy and that’s more than enough with Article 2 of paragraph 2 of the Corruption Act,” Eddy Hiariej said.

Edhy Prabowo is known to be a suspect in the recipient of a bribe in the case of an alleged lobster seed export license bribe.

Edhy was named a suspect along with six other people after being arrested in a manual arrest operation (OTT) initiated by the KPK on November 25, 2020.

After 10 days or, to be precise, on Sunday (6/12/2020), the KPK accused Juliari Batubara as Minister of Social Affairs and four other people as suspects in an alleged case of bribery related to the social assistance (bans) for the Jakarta area in 2020.
