It offered additional freedoms to vaccines, Varadkar says

The people of the Republic will be granted additional liberties when they have been completely vaccinated, according to the Tánaiste.

Leo Varadkar has confirmed that the Government is developing a “digital vaccine certificate” for people to prove that they have been fully inoculated.

He said the government will introduce “additional measures for full vaccination, more freedoms for those who have been vaccinated.”

He added: “We are developing a digital green certificate certificate, so you can prove that you are fully vaccinated.”

Varadkar made the comments in a video posted on social media on Easter weekend.

The Tainista said the state’s vaccination program would accelerate in the coming weeks and told the public, “We’ll surprise you.”

He said: “We anticipate that by mid-May most adults will have had their first dose and those over 70 will be fully vaccinated.

“And by the end of June, the vast majority, more than 80% of people, will have been offered the first dose.

“We hope to do even better, and many will also have their second dose.

“So you know, really the acceleration phase, the ascent phase is April, May and June.

“With the addition of the fourth vaccine, the Johnson and Johnson single dose vaccine is still made a little easier.

“I know many people may feel that they will never be vaccinated. We will surprise you.

“As I say, most adults will have had the first dose by the end of May. That’s not too far off.”

The earlier the vaccination program, the more options the government will have to reopen the country, Varadkar said.

“Many people, the most vulnerable, will be completely vaccinated at this time [end of May], and that allows us to make decisions about reopening the country that we were unable to make last week, ”he said.

Varadkar said if figures continue in the right direction, the government will consider reopening non-essential personal and retail services such as hairdressers and barbershops in May.

Religious services, contact sports, museums, galleries and libraries will also be “in the mix” by then, he said. – PA
