The Liverpool duo return in a seven-goal thriller against Hertha Berlin

Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez returned to action on Thursday night when Liverpool were beaten 4-3 by German side Hertha Berlin.

Liverpool boss Van Dijk and his defender Gomez came off the bench for the last 20 minutes in Innsbruck, where Jurgen KloppThe group played their second full game of 90 minutes of their mini-tour.

Van Dijk and Gomez were absent for most of last season due to knee injuries as Liverpool lost their Premier League crown to Manchester City.

Uncomfortable: a regular per club that could be phased out

Dutch international Van Dijk was operated on in November after damaging a previous cruciate ligament in Liverpool’s 2-2 Premier League draw at Merseyside rivals Everton in October.

Gomez has also recovered from knee surgery to repair a tendon he injured while training in England ahead of his friendly against the Republic of Ireland in November.

The Bundesliga team, Hertha, advanced 2-0 after 31 minutes with Argentine midfielder Santiago Ascacibar and the good end of Suat Serdar before Liverpool backs away to restore parity in the middle.

Kostas Tsimikas centered Sadio Mane to convert from close range and Takumi Minamino made a brilliant save after the good work of Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita.

Liverpool substitute Kaide Gordon, 16, approached the Reds twice before Hertha regained the lead through Stevan Jovetic.

Jovetic made Hertha’s fourth goal clear and the 88th minute volley from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made it 4-3.

The defeat was Liverpool’s first in the pre-season after two 1-1 draws in mini-games against Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart and last Friday’s 1-0 win over Mainz.
