Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett threatened to withdraw his Jewish party if he did not receive a defense portfolio after the sudden resignation of Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
"If Benet is not the defense minister, his party will withdraw from the ruling coalition," Jeruzalem said.
Earlier, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation quoted Likud officials as saying that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would probably take over the defense portfolio after Liberman's departure.
Liberman suddenly resigned from his post on Wednesday the day after a cease-fire between Palestinian resistance foes and Israel was reached.
Liberman announced his resignation at a meeting of members of his party, Isisrael Beitein.
If Bennet's Jewish house party withdraws from the government, the current coalition led by Netanka will lose its kneset majority, making it vulnerable to a parliamentary vote on distrust.
