PETALING JAIA: Storm Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) explained that the image of a car partially submerged in the floodwaters in the tunnel on Sunday (November 11th) was not in the SMART tunnel.
A statement on Monday (November 12th) said the car was captured in a tunnel leading from Jalan Tun Razak to the KLCC parking lot.
SMART said that on Sunday (November 11th), at 5.49 in the morning, a signal from the Ministry of Irrigation and Drainage was received to close the SMART highway traffic due to heavy precipitation and enabled SMART Mode 3 activation, where the road was cleared and closed for traffic.
"Mode 3 is a status used to indicate that the SMART tunnel is used to divert excess water from Sg Klang and Sg Ampang away from the SMART coverage area, thereby saving it from flooding," it said in its statement.
He said that he then reopened the SMART tunnel in traffic at 7.35 hours later that day.
SMART added that the main role of the tunnel was the mitigation of floods in areas considered to be the central business environment (CBD), including Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Melaka, Leboh Ampang and Dataran Merdeka and its environment.
"These areas are currently without flooding incidents, but the SMART Management and Operating Team closely monitors the Sg Kelang status that flows through these areas," the statement said.
She also assured the public that her team was on standby for 24 hours.
SMART also advised the public to obtain information on the operational status of the SMART tunnel via social media, radio stations, TVs and newspapers, as well as the message change sign (VMS).
Heavy rain on Sunday night captured several drivers in a tunnel near Jalan Tun Razak.
The driver's photo that was sitting above his tunnel car became viral on social media.
Social network users assume that the photos of a partially submerged car happened in the SMART tunnel.
Bernama said that the victim, identified only as Teh, 26, quickly went out of the window of his car when the water began to swim in his car.
Five other vehicles were also trapped in the tunnel, but the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department managed to bring all victims to a safe location.
