Aeromekica discards 200 workers

Aeromecke will fire 200 people as part of a series of cost-cutting initiatives. The airline informed EL UNIVERSAL to reduce administrative and operational space.

The company sent a letter to its employees yesterday announcing that it will make adjustments in its organizational structure, in addition to reducing consulting costs, travel, training, events and office supplies.

Losses do not include pilots, but include an extra charge.

The Association of Aircraft Compensation Unions calculates that up to 100 additional costs could be discarded.

"Achieving the goals we have set requires making difficult decisions both for our people and for the organization, because this implies adjusting our budget, eliminating some positions and moving others," says a letter sent by the Aeromekico Executive Committee.

According to the Mexican aviation pilots alliance, these adjustments are the result of airlines' decision to put five planes on the ground and suspend nine routes in 2019.

Aeromecico decided to stop three Embraer 170 and two Boeing 737-700 aircraft that could be sold or re-used depending on the company's performance and will suspend routes: Mexico City-Boston, Washington-Dulles and Portland; Monterey-Las Vegas, Tijuana, Merida and Veracruz, as well as Guadalajara to Cancun and San Jose, California.

These changes mean that the aerodynamic offer of the seat will not increase during 2019, the first time it has not increased since 2009, the company said.

In the third quarter of the year, Aeromekico recorded a net loss of 617 million pesos. The airline was affected by an increase in turbosine prices by 45.7% and a depreciation of 6.7% of Mexican peso against the dollar.

Costs per kilometer kilometers of airline companies in the pesos increased by 15% during the third quarter of the year, while costs per kilometer of kilometers in dollars increased by 7.8%.

The aeromechanics also affected the cancellation of the airport in Tekcoc, as this means that in the short term there will be no solution for saturating the International Airport to Mexico City, and the number of frequencies or flights can not be increased.

After the announcement of the cancellation of the construction of the airport in Tekcoco on October 29, the value of Aeromekico shares was 22.04 pesos, and yesterday it was quoted at 23 pesos per share, a slight recovery.

In October, Aeromekico carried over a million 797 thousand passengers, an increase of 2.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

International travelers increased by 5.6%, while national travelers increased by 1.1%.
