Specialists in epidemiology and infectious diseases in this city have indicated that the vast majority of flu deaths in the country are present in people without vaccination and who suffer from comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and asthma, among others.
During a press conference organized by a pharmaceutical company, an internist and an infectious elderly adult, Darwin Stalin's Torres Erazo said that in the biggest circulation season, that is, from epidemiological week number 40, which began on October 8, So far, 267 cases have been reported and nine deaths. "A significant number reported by the monitoring system of the General Directorate of Epidemiology, which has only tripled over the past nine years," explained the expert from the National Autonomous Government of Mexico (UNAM) University.
He noted that "given that 81% of cases during the inter-season have occurred in the southern part of the country, it is important to raise awareness and invite the population in general, especially the risk groups that are vaccinated at this beginning of the flu season 2018-2019."
According to official reports, Eucalyptus, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, Campeche and Tabasco were the most vulnerable countries during the seasonal flu season in 2018, affecting mainly the age group from one to nine years and from 40 to 49 years.
Head of the Department of Endocrinology at the National Medical Center of the West, Jesus Miguel Escalante Pulido, explained that diseases that affect the immune system of patients, such as obesity and diabetes, are conditions that endanger health.
"It brings them into a group of potential risks of complications from influenza, as it increases three times the possibility of hospitalization and up to six times more than death," he said.
