A lab-only virus kills only cancer cells

Dual-action virus

Researchers, mostly funded by MRC and Cancer Research UK, say that if further testing confirms the safety of a customized double-action virus, they have only been tested in carcinoma samples in mice, and next year, cancer patients can be tested.

Healthy cells unchanged

In a study published in Cancer Research, the researchers used a virus called the single-cell tumor, which is already being used in clinical trials for the treatment of cancer. It was made to infect only cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unchanged.
