The Californian Tour's queen stage was won by Tadej Pogačar. The young Slovene from the UAE was able to double-stroke the mount of Baldy's attack after a battle with the generation's companion Sergio Higuita. George Bennett finished third shortly thereafter. Tejay van Garderen dropped four kilometers from the start and had to deliver the yellow jersey.
Hofstede in flight
On the way to Mount Baldy, Lennard Hofstede (Jumbo-Visma), Pawel Bernas (CCC), Matteo Fabbro (Katusha-Alpecin) and Hugo Houle (Astana) remained the longest since the first flight. For a long time they drove less than a minute before the squad, which was driven for a long time by EF Education First of leader Tejay van Garderen and then Trek-Segafredo by Richie Porte.
The first serious attack of the remaining favorite group came from Maximilian Schachmann, a few miles from the foot of Mount Baldy. The German signed up immediately to the drivers and pushed forward firmly. Hofstede could briefly follow Schachmann unleashed, until the Dutch parked and saw the German march. It led to 45 seconds of the competition.
Battlefield in the final climb
Among the favorites, Gianni Moscon was the first of the first position to go. The pace that EF imposed on the select group was too slow for Kasper Asgreen. The Danish continued and, as a result, Van Garderen had to pass four kilometers from the end. Then there was a demolition of George Bennett, who brought with him Sergio Higuita, Tade jPogačar, Simon Spilak and Richie Porte. They reached Schachmann at a distance of 3.5 kilometers.
Pogačar was the best freedom leader of Van Garderen, Asgreen and Moscon. He managed to leave with Higuita and Bennett. The young Colombian in particular (who debuted this round with EF Education First) impressed with his gears. A status quo allowed several pilots to return from the bottom. Higuita returned to the pedals.
To impress young people
The only climbing goat of 21 years immediately hit a hole, which had to be closed by the generator Pogačar and Bennett. Porte faced switching problems. With the final kilometer in view, Pogačar left Bennett behind; Slovakia closed the distance with Higuita in a short time. Together they went to the finish line. Higuita took the lead, but due to an error in the last corner, Pogačar was able to undergo and win the win. In fact, the 20-year-old Slovenian doubled. Bennett crossed the line in third position.
Pogačar is at the top with a 16-second lead over Higuita. Asgreen managed to limit the damage and left third in 19 seconds, followed by Bennett (0p 28s) and Porte (40). The sixth number of Simon Spilak already has more than one minute of Pogačar.
The California Tour ends Saturday evening in Dutch-Belgian with a walk that includes two races. However, they are in the middle of the scenario.
