The neurological form of rhinopneumonia was observed at the location in the municipality of Hardenberg. In the meantime one horse is euthanized, two horses with symptoms are stable.
The immediate environment is informed
Horses present in the appropriate barn may not leave the site in the coming weeks. No horses from the outside. Horse lodgings in the immediate vicinity and contacts of the stables were informed of the situation. Horses are checked daily by a veterinarian.
The animal health service (GD) confirmed after research that this location is rinopneumonia (EHV1), a viral infection that can manifest in the form of cold symptoms, abortion and / or neurological symptoms.
Rhinopneumonia is a common disease in Europe. An important preventive measure is to prevent an infected horse from having direct contact with other horses. Horse contamination occurs through the respiratory tract. In addition, the virus can also transmit people over clothing and hands. Vaccination helps to reduce the pressure of the infection in the population of the horse, but does not protect it directly from the neurological form.
Maintaining separate groups of horses (young horses, pregnant mares and sport horses) gives the virus less chance of spreading. If you suspect in your horses of rhinopneumonia, it is necessary to consult a veterinarian.
