The NASA experiment with twins shows the influence of long space travels on the ARA body


An important experiment with the twins of astronauts Scott and Mark Kelly has given more clarity to NASA about the impact of space flights on the human body.

Scott spent almost a year at the Space Station International (ISS), while Mark stayed on Earth. During this period, Scott's body, unlike his twin brother, suffered several biological changes.

Faster after the space trip

It was surprising that Scott showed an extension of the so-called telomeres, these are the embedded ends of the chromosomes. These telomeres are reduced as people get older.

Back on the ground, Scott's telomers were reduced rapidly. The length of the telomeres returned to normal after six months. According to the researchers, these changes can have negative consequences for their health. This may indicate that people who have been in space "are older".

It turned out that it was not the only change. During his space travel, Scott also experienced a thickening of his carotid artery, weight loss, changes in intestinal flora, DNA damage, diminished cognitive abilities and decreased vision.

The twin brothers also did an experiment with the flu. The two men gave a flu shot. It emerged that both the flu vaccine and the immune system of Scott continue to function well in space.

Radiation and weight loss affect health

According to the researchers, several causes for body changes can be identified, such as the influence of spatial radiation and weight loss on the human body. However, according to the space agency, the influence of radiation is much less than expected.

The researchers are planning to repeat the study soon to prove the results.
