Bergensavisen – Free vaccine in November

It has gone to the national state when it turned out that more than 18,000 doses of HPV vaccines, sufficient for the vaccination of 6000 people, should be destroyed.

The reason was that the state contracted a new vaccine manufacturer this autumn. Since the agreement with the old manufacturer allowed only the doses to be used in the childhood vaccination program, and young people receive a new vaccine in the autumn, others remained in danger of expiration.

HPV easily infects sexual contact and can lead to cancer (see the fact box at the bottom).

The vaccine is now included in the program for the vaccination of children for boys and girls. In addition, all women born in 1991 or later can get a free vaccine if they take their first dose by the end of December this year.

Ektra vulnerable groups

This year, the state, the Norwegian Public Health Institute and the drug maker agreed that surplus doses could be used for other vulnerable groups.

In October, the Municipality of Bergen established an offer for addicts, sex-selling men, born in 1991 or later, who have sex with men.

"We have been in Strak House and MO Centers to provide women in vulnerable environments, they have poor advice and are prone to infection, says Agnes Giertsen, a nurse at the Engen Health Center and a lecturer at the College of Hogskolen and Westland (HVL), to BA.

Vaccines are offered at Smittevern's office during everyday booking. In addition, the Youth Center for Health and Students in Engen offers a range of men who have sex with men on Thursdays from 10 to 14.

– Vaccination is on the day of the summer, so you need to get the first of three doses by the end of November. There are still many unused vaccines, so it's urgent to do this, "Giertsen says.

– Know that we are saving our lives

In the meadow, they made 300 doses.

– Here's the first arrival, the first service. These vulnerable groups only receive free vaccines until they are emptied, Giertsen emphasizes.

This autumn, a group of HVL care students had an eighth project to disseminate the message about the vaccines of the relevant groups.

"I noticed that there were many young people who want a vaccine here in the last weeks. Everyone says they have seen information in the campuses, so the students did a good and important job," says nursing nurse.

"If I get a vaccine, I ask him to further expand the message, so we come to the worst groups in the groups that we want to reach, so it's incredibly valuable for someone to come here.

Even if you have not received your first dose within the time limit, you can get two doses for free.

– All doses are counted. One dose is protected, well protected by two and protected by life from wood, "Giertsen says, concluding:

"Both socioeconomic and personal, the gain is huge. We know that we are saving our lives.

Facts about HPV

In Norway, HPV causes every year:

Approximately 10,000 women are diagnosed with mild cell changes

About 3,000 women have severe cell changes and a part of the cervix should be removed

About 300 women receive cervical cancer

About 300 cases of other cancers in men and women

About 70 women die of cervical cancer

1 out of 10 Norwegian women and men receive genital warts 45 years of age.
