Jumping on the Welsh-Malinki competitions will inaugurate the 2018/2019 season. The portal PolskieRadio24.pl has prepared a special website on this occasion, where you can find all the most important information about the hill competition in the 40th edition of the World Cup.
Two wins in the overall World Cup qualifier, a record five triumphs at the 4-Hills Tournament, two individual and three world championship titles – these are just the most important scales from the Lahti player collection. Janne Ahonen firmly deserved the name of a live legend of jumping. During his career for years he was at the top of the competition, usually watching rivals from the top of the classification of the competition.

Fine in recent years on the hills has shown, however, that the hero is also a man. He missed places in the second series of competitions and is increasingly confronted with the unpleasant attitudes of compatriots who had formerly adored him. The 24-year prosecution of some of the Olympic Games has failed. Can we say that the unsuccessful performances from the next return to the jump in 2013 overshadowed the years of the success of the Finnish ski jumper? A brief summary of this great career is enough to be aware that the extraordinary player has decided to say goodbye to the World Cup Carousel.
"Janne Ahonen finishes his career for the third time" – the title of the title sounds like the name of the station of the cross …

He jumped with the child
He was born on May 11, 1977 in Lahti – a city that is the capital of Nordic skiing in Finland. Already as a seven-year-old boy, his parents registered him for the local club Hiihtoseur, where his talents were developed by his later colleagues from the national team, such as Toni Nieminen, Tami Kiuru, Veli-Matti Lindström, Ville Larinto and Kalle Keituri. As he remembered a year later, jumping from early childhood was the sport that best suited him.
In addition to jumping to jump, Janne was also a great talent. He jumped not only a few meters of buildings in the Salpausellka complex, but also … from the couch in a family home. During the 1980s, Finland saw two excellent jumps: they are considered to be the best in the history of this discipline, Matti Nikaenen and a little less the title of Jarri Puikkonen. Both were Ahonen's idol, which among the foreign players was most appreciated by German Jens Veissflog.
Soon, it turns out that the Lahti jumper stands out not only in his club. In 1991 and 1992 Ahonen achieved the title of junior champion of the Nordic countries. It became clear that the 15-year-old debuted at the World Cup. On December 13, 1992, he took part in a competition in Ruhpolding, Germany, where he took the 56th place, taking only nine rivals.
At that time, only fifteen of the best players scored a point on the general classification. This art went to Ahonen on March 7, 1993, in the hometown of Lahti. He finished the competition in 11th place. He was already a double champion in the junior world – in Harrah's he won titles in individual and team competition. For the first time he went to the senior championship. In Falun he was 31st in a big hill competition. Together with his colleagues, he was also the sixth in the team classification.
Fast promotion to the top
While the debut season in the older group was not particularly successful, the next Ahonen settled in the leading world hand. December 19, 1993 is a special date for Fina. Unexpectedly, it turned out to be the best at the World Cup in Engelberg. He was 16 years old, 7 months old and 8 days old. In the end, in the classification of the end of the World Cup, he was in 10th place. He also debuted at the Olympics, although he was not successful at Lillehammer. He was better at the junior championship in Austria Breitenwang. He defended gold medals individually and in the team.

Ahonen remained in the world for years. In the first fifteen general classification of the World Cup, he ranked each season until 2008, when he first shocked the world, notifying him of completing his career.
In the 2003/2004 season and, especially in the 2004/2005 season, dominated the world's ski jumps, resulting in a score in Cristal Ball. In 1999 and 2006, he finished second in the season, losing to Martin Schmitt and Jakub Janda, respectively. Four times (1995, 1996, 2000 and 2008) was classified in the third position. In total, he won 36 competitions – only Gregor Schlierenzauer (53), Nikaenen (46) and Adam Małisz (43) scored better. He stood on the podium 108 times – so far no one has achieved this achievement.
Biggest wins in the World Cup:
53 – Schlierenzauer
46 – Nikaenen
39 – MAŁISZ
36 – Ahonen
33 – Veissflog
29 – # STOCH
28 – Schmitt

Dominator with a stone face
Polish fans briefly remembered the 2000/2001 season and the "Eagle of the Vistula" dominance. Malisz won 11 competitions at that time. It seemed that it would be hard for anyone to win so regularly during the season.
The Polonian record was improved four years later by Ahonen. Finn most of the season jumped into the second league from the main rivals, defeating twelve times. Especially the beginning of the fight was concerned with the competition: up to eleven thirteen first individual competitions ended with the victory of "Masks".

Although he jumped into a special iron mask in the early years of his career, the pseudonym first of all comes to an exceptional limit during the competition. The situations in which TV operators managed to "capture" Ahonen's smile can be counted on the fingers of one hand. It is interesting that Fin behaved completely differently from the brightness of the camera. Among his colleagues, he even had the opinion of a horse-keeper who was concerned about the good mood in the Finnish national team. One of Ahonen's best friends from a jump jump, Risto Jusilainen said about Maskin's stone face in an interview for the portal jump-polska.pl:
– If the camera's eye for a moment made a moment, he was a completely relaxed, funny and cheerful man. The stone face disappeared – said the third competitor in the general classification of the World Cup in the 2000/2001 season.
Ahonen quietly accepted successive triumphs, and in Finland he became a national hero. The fans were crazy for him, and the stands below the hill in Lahti, Kuopio and Kuusamou filled the cup competition to the last place. In the last years of his career, however, he had to be convinced that the mercy of the fans was driving on an extremely diverse horse …

King of the Four Hills
By the end of December and January, there is a great time in the world of jumping. The rivalries in Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofschofen last for only a week electrified players and thousands of fans under jumps and millions in front of the TV. The real king of the tournament at 4,000 should be called Ahonen. He won the German-Austrian competition five times: in 1999 (despite the lack of victory in some competitions), 2003, 2005, 2006 (former Janda – the only such case in the history of the tournament) and in 2008.

56. TCS was also the last major triumph of "Masks". Finn began with the third position in Obertsdorf. The great favorite of Austrian Thomas Morgenstern won the World Cup. In Ga-Pau, the best was another Austrian – Schlierenzauer, who occupied the second Ahonen by 1.7 points. However, the presentation of Finnish routine was a competition in the homeland of two rivals. He went to Austria with a loss of 3.4 points for Schlierenzauer and barely 0.2 for Morgenstern.
The only time in history was not at that time possible to conduct an event in Innsbruck. So, the world's two best jumper in the world faced Bischofschofen. Both competitions were robbed by Ahonen, who in general classification occupied 19.8 points, and for the fifth time received the keys of the luxury car, the main prize in the competition, from the organizers.
While the 4-hilde tournament was a kind of Ahonen's performance, legendary Fin was completely different during the Olympic Games. Of the most important event, four years have been won by two silver discs – both in the team competition. While in Turin (2006) the second place could be called a success because of frivolous Austrians, the defeat four years earlier was accepted as a catastrophe in the country. Germany proved to be only 0.1 points better.
At Salt Lake City, Ahonen was a Finnish team leader at the team competition. The weaker jumps of the then junior world champion Veli-Matti Lindström made the Germans enjoy gold. However, it seemed, however, that the 25-year-old "Maska" would easily get to the Olympic champion in the future, especially since he won the TCS next season, and in the next two he reached the Crystal Ball. However, as it turned out, the individual record and team championship at the most important sporting event for four years proved beyond the reach of Ahonen.

Finn had a great appetite for a medal before the games in 1998. He went to Nagano as a world champion on a normal hill. However, he moved from fourth place to the K-90 Hill, losing the bronze with Austrian Andreas Vidhoeltzel with only one point. It starts in a large facility, where it did not pass the first round and team competition (Finns took only the fifth place), led Ahonen to leave Hakuba, where the competitions took place, with a feeling of great disappointment.
Four years later, Ahonen's preparations were upsetting … the birth of his son – Mitz. Skoczek, known for his party life, decided to focus on his father's duties. He designed the house himself, in which he would live with his future husband and wife. No wonder his results at the World Cup were weaker, and Fin was sporadically in the top ten competitions. In Salt Lake City, however, Ahonen was strong again, although the rest (including Adam Małisz) proved even stronger. It was the "Eagle of the Vistula" that cleared his bronze from the nose on a normal object, won 1.5 points. On the big hill, Fin is nine, while the aforementioned silver in the team competition was treated only as a comforting prize …
In Turin in 2006, once again, "Maska" applied for the highest recognition. A year ago he was once again a world champion. In Obertsdorf he won the competition on the big hill. In Italy, however, he did not repeat his success, although he was charming one month earlier during the 4-Hills tournament. He was especially close to the medal he wanted during the competition at the regular facility. After the first round, he was the second runner, but the second jump was weaker and fell to the sixth place. Then he survived deja vu from four years ago: he won the ninth position on a big hill and a silver medal along with his teammates in the team competition.
It breaks down the hill and it returns
The 2007/2008 season brought Ahonen's fifth triumph in the TCS, the third place in the final classification of the World Championship, silver and bronze medals at world championships on flights (he collected as many as seven dogs from this event) and four cup contests. On March 4, he won the competition in Kuopio, which will be his last triumph later on. On March 26, 2011, the world of jumping was a sensational news. Finn, who after the Olympic Games in Turin said he was not planning more Olympic starts, informed about the ending of his sporting career.
– I'm starting to have no motivation to fly. In addition, I want to go as a forward jumper, "he told a press conference in Helsinki. Ahonen was 31 years old, but he assured me that he had not thought of returning to the jump. In summer, he organized a farewell competition in Lahti, with participation, among others, Malisz, Schmitt, Morgenstern, Andreas Goldberger and Noriaki Kasai. After finishing, the big rivals from the ski jumps set up a great tread for the departing champion.

The decision lasted for a year.
– I was talking about getting back with my wife. The desire was so strong that I decided to try. I would repent to the end of my life if I decided otherwise, "he said then.
The only goal he set out is victory at the individual Olympic competition. First Ahonen's return was extremely successful. Fin was charming again during the 4-Hills Tournament. He was on the podium three times, and in the general classification he lost only Austrian Andreas Kofler.

At the Vancouver Olympics, Vancouver went as a fairly serious medal candidate, although in February his form was not as good as a month earlier. From the beginning he worked well on a normal hill, he achieved top results during training. However, he had to go through the taste again in the competition. Simon Ammann, Adam Małisz and Gregor Schlierenzauer – it looked as though the podium looked during the competition on regular and big jumps. At a small facility, Ahonen landed just outside the podium, the larger – he did not enter the second series … Delivered did not appear at a team competition, in which his friends could not get any disc of the disc.
Next season – 2010/2011. She was completely unsuccessful. The 44th place at the World Cup, far from the placements in the TCS and World Cup competitions, meant that Ahonen suspended the skis for the second time. He stated that he can not dedicate himself to sports as much as he did before. The mask has led to an increasingly organized private life (his son started collecting jumps), he started working on a business (wearing skirts, including a jumpsuit jacket) and, as he said, he had a lot of jumping … He left the scene just like the big rivals: Adam Malisz, Michael Uhrmann and Andreas Kuettel.

In January 2013, it turned out again that the wolf dragged into the forest. The interview for MTV3 ended a sensational announcement: I'll be back again. Ahonen wanted to fight for the Olympic medal in Sochi. It returns when Finnish jumps slowly fall into a stagnation in which they are still standing today. Unlike 2009, he was not ready from the beginning.
There was no chance for medals. He did not bring them from Sochi or Pongong. During the World Championships in Falun (2015) and the Lahti family (two years later) he was in the second and third decade. In addition to fifth place in Titisee-Neustadt, he did not win satisfactory results in World Cup competitions for all five seasons. Suffice it to say that in the seasons 2015/2016 and 2017/2018 it did not even achieve a single point for general classification.

The fans who fell in love with him once lost patience. "Maska" did not show it after him, but was very worried about the negative comments on the Finnish internet forums. When the former star of the jumps entered the national team for the next season, it became clear that his stories of desire to participate in the Olympic Games in 2022 must be placed between fairy tales. Less than a month before the start of the new season, it officially announced its decision, without regrets.
"Some fans will not have to shame myself over time," he said sadly. He also emphasized that he will never stop jumping for pleasure, but from now on he will dedicate himself to his beloved discipline only as a hobbyist.
The original ends his career
Ahonen is a great athlete. Although in the end it must be emphasized that this is not always a good jumper. For years it was a secret that Finnish coaches after the competition did not deny different types of alcoholic beverages. It appeared that after the birth of her son, and then the marriage with longtime partner Tia Jakobson (July 24, 2004), "Maska" will slightly change the way of life.
However, these hopes were futile. It is interesting that the flight under influence did not prevent even to go down the distance equal to the world record. In the final season of 2004/2005, Ahonen competed on the Mamut Hill in Planica, sailing at a distance of … 240 meters, which was then the longest leap in history. Unfortunately, this attempt did not stop, and the record and victory at the competition in the skies were given to Norvegian Bioener Einar Romoeren, who received "only" 239 meters. Fin is about how he spent the night and the night before the competition, after several years in his autobiographical book "Royal Eagle" in a book written by journalist Pekka Holopainen.
"We drank a beer box with the boys in the hotel room. Later we decided to go to town. We visited all possible pubs in Krajna Gora. In the morning, after returning to the hotel, I went to the balcony and lit a cigarette. Only then did I realize how stupid I was. I told my friends that we will compete for the moment on the biggest hill in the world.
