Experts warn about the health impact of cannabis use

The smoking conference is held until Saturday at the Albufeira hotel in Algarve.

Several experts warned on Thursday at a smoking conference in Algarve that it is important to enlighten young people on the neurological and respiratory effects of using cannabis on health, whose risks are likely to be underestimated.

According to biologist Teresa Summavielle, the fact that this psychoactive drug is used for medical purposes also causes "confusion," which can lead to a "reduced risk perception" of the brain, primarily among adolescents.

On the other hand, President of the Brazilian Society of Gasology and Theology Jose Miguel Chatkin warned about the effects of cannabis use on the respiratory system, stating that it was not possible to prove the relationship between his consumption and to increase the likelihood of developing pulmonary carcinoma.

According to a researcher at the Institute of Health Research and Innovation in the University of Porto, frequent cannabis use can lead to the development of psychiatric illnesses and behaviors similar to those seen in patients with schizophrenia. "It was very important to do, earlier in schools, a clear policy to learn the effects of these components: tobacco, cannabis and other drugs," Teresa Summavielle told Luz.
