In Serbia, almost every fifth child has excess weight, eight percent is obese, and the number of obese children and those diagnosed with diabetes increases from year to year. The right choice of foods, the consumption of fruits and vegetables and regular physical activity are the main factors in the prevention of obesity and its consequences, such as diabetes, the conclusion of the participants of the "Preventive to Healthy Adult" Panel, which was held in Belgrade to mark the World Day Against diabetes.
Prof. Dr Vesna Dimitrijević Srećković, an endocrinologist from the Clinical Center of Serbia, emphasized the stomach obesity, which is the main feature of the metabolic and metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of diabetes and other diseases. The research she performed confirmed the presence of metabolic syndrome in 37 per cent of obese children and youth, while the remaining 63 per cent had an over-metabolic syndrome, or only an increased volume of waist and another risk factor, most often low HDL cholesterol.
Every other person does not know that he has diabetes
World Diabetes Day is celebrated today in the world under the slogan "Diabetes affects the family". Currently, more than 425 million people are living with this disease, and most people with type 2 diabetes are diagnosed. Any other person with this diagnosis does not know that it is ill. According to the Institute of Public Health "Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut" In Serbia, diabetes is the fifth leading cause of dying and the fifth leading cause of disease burden, and it is estimated that about 710,000 adult population of Serbia suffers from this monstrosity. Almost a third of patients at the time of diagnosing diabetes already have one or more late complications of this disease.
It should be noted that this disease in 2017 was the cause of health care costs of at least $ 727 billion, which is more than the military budget of the US and China combined. Every 11th adult, or 425 million people, has diabetes, and it is expected that the number of people with diabetes will reach 522 million by 2030. This disease was the cause of four million deaths two years ago.
The incidence of metabolic syndrome increased statistically significantly with age: in obese children from 7 to 15 years it was 34.8 percent, adolescents from 16 to 20 years were 38.9 percent, young people between 20 and 30 years were 58.1 percent, while the code of adults have recorded 38 percent.
– Abdominal obesity is responsible for the depression of adolescents and young people, as fatty tissue cytokines affect the degradation of tryptophan, which is responsible for the development of the hormone of happiness, and instead produce products that lead to numerous disorders and depression. Timely reaction and prevention are extremely important. These are healthy Mediterranean nutrition and physical activity that involves at least an hour of fast walking. When we lose weight, we reduce stomach obesity, and we have beneficial effects on the regulation of fat, blood pressure and sugar levels, and in this way we prevent or correct existing premetabolic or metabolic syndrome – said Dr Dimitrijević Srećković, who more than 10 years ago menus designed for a healthy family in order to prevent obesity, diabetes, high fats, blood pressure and vascular complications.
The fact that children in the 21st century are less likely to move than a few decades ago, according to prof. Dr. Vladimir Koprivica, has to encourage all actors in the society to get started and make important steps in order to increase physical activity from early childhood. It is also important to make individual approaches in the design of physical activity.
– Movement is natural for humans and is of great importance at all times of life. Through numerous activities in the family, schools, training schools and sports organizations, the Society must enable young people to have a professionally-trained exercise – explained Professor Koprivica.
Bojana Marković, from the Diabetes Association "Blue Circle", pointed out that support is important, but also that this disease, how children and parents live with her, but also the ways of prevention, is constantly said.
– With the support they are easier to accept and overcome the everyday obligations that diabetes carries with you. Our association has continuous support through adequate patient education, expert lectures, working with experienced psychologists and through the exchange of patient experience which means a lot – Markovic added.
When diagnosing a child with diabetes, treatment is a complex process, from insulin therapy, the use of appropriate nutrition, physical activity and psychological support. Nevertheless, Dr. Veroslava Stanković from the High School of Health Studies in Belgrade, puts first priority on prevention.
– Statistics show that a large number of children in Serbia are obese. Therefore, it is necessary to learn from the earliest childhood of children the correct nutrition and importance of certain groups of foods, as well as the harmfulness of fast food and sweets. Children should be taught that breakfast is a mandatory meal, that other meals should not be skipped and it is mandatory to take one fruit from a meal. The right choice of foods, fitness and physical activity are the main factors in the prevention of obesity and its consequences – added Dr. Stanković.
On this occasion, it was emphasized that the project "Maxi School Caravan", which is visited by 100 schools in Serbia and which includes 15,000 champions, has shown that, as explained by Milica Popovic, how much the children can explain in the game through the game why it is important Eat vegetables and so be healthy.
