There is a century of drought in Orava, Liptov and Poloniny. And it can be worse

Orava, Liptov and Polonin lacks rain for a long time. Local activists must throw trees, the worst situation is with the neighbors of the Czech Republic. Can we protect our forests?

Glossy green needles, mossy carpets in the shade of old trees, resin odor, fresh air and perfect silence. Therefore, we idealize our forests, but the reality is very bitter.

In the greener regions of Slovakia, such as Orava, Liptov and Poloniny, this point of view is just a memory. They are plagued by extreme drought, lacking 40 to 100 millimeters of precipitation.

An example is Oravská Lesná, where only about 30 millimeters of rain fell throughout the month of June. Some parts of Orava have long lost rainfall. Almost a fifth of the territory of Slovakia suffers from extreme drought, while northern regions are the biggest problem.

Meteorologist and climate scientist Maroš Turňa of the Hydrometeorological Institute of Slovakia (SHMÚ) warns that it can be even worse. "There is a lack of national precipitation, like this year in May. Storms and rains rarely meet the whole territory of Slovakia. If the current distribution of pressure formations does not change, the situation may worsen", explains .
