Bad oral hygiene can cause Alzheimer's

For a long time, field scientists have thought that dementia of Alzheimer's disease can be an infectious disease. Even so, researchers have failed to understand the exact processes of this infection. However, a new study found the clearest indication to date that there is a link between Alzheimer's and a bacterial infection.

Now is the early detection of Alzheimer's?Does aspirin double the risk of skin cancer?

Researchers led by the microbiologist Jan Potempa of the American University of Louisville have discovered the bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis, responsible for dental and gum disease, in the brain of deceased Alzheimer's patients.

Subsequently, the researchers found in experiments with mice that, in fact, a buccal infection leads to colonization of brain bacteria. In the brain they caused an increased production of antibacterial beta-amyloid protein, whose deposits are related to Alzheimer's.

At the same time, the researchers found in the gingipain brain. These are toxic enzymes formed by bacteria. He also found them in the brain of the deceased, who had never been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's could have broken with them if he had lived longer. Researchers estimate this as a sign that does not lead to Alzheimer's disease to the teeth and gums, but vice versa.

As part of the investigation, Cortexyme, a pharmaceutical company that participates in the study, has developed a compound called COR388, which reduced the bacterial count of a cerebral infection with Porphyromonas gingivalis, as well as the beta production -amyloid in an experiment with mice. However, according to the researchers, it is still not possible to confirm the effectiveness of the COR388 in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
