The film that won the Palme d’Or was announced at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival. Jury President Spike Lee took a false step on stage.
The closing ceremony of this year’s Cannes Film Festival was held on Saturday evening.
Jury President Spike Lee, 64, made a false comment when he awarded the prize: he announced the Palme d’Or too soon.
The winning film “Titane” by Julia Ducournau (37 years old) only marks the second victory of a director in the history of the festival.
On Saturday evening, at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival, director Spike Lee was honored to announce the winner of the first prize. So this year’s jury festival president should have announced the best male performer. But Lee got into a mess and quickly revealed the winner of the Palme d’Or.
The award for best film is the most important award in the entire film festival. Therefore, whoever wins the Palme d’Or should only be announced at the end of the closing ceremony. But Lee misunderstood the moderator’s request. I wanted to know about him, “What’s the first prize?”
Before the other eight members of the jury could even begin arresting the 64-year-old, he had already read the decisive words on the sheet of paper: “The golden palm goes to ‘Titan.'” Completely relaxed and without much fanfare, Lee announced the most important information of the night.
“I have no excuses”
In the 74-year history of the Cannes Film Festival, “Titane” is only the second film by a female director to win the Palme d’Or. Director Julia Ducournau (37) was only able to accept the prestigious award for her film at the end of the ceremony. Because after Lee’s slip, the night continued according to the original plan.
During the press conference that followed after the award ceremony, Lee spoke about the setback. “I have no excuses, I fucked him,” said the director of “Malcolm X.” Lee said he was a big fan of sports. “I’m like who doesn’t get the free kick at the end of a game.”
Ducournau is not angry
“I messed it up. It’s that simple,” Spike Lee added. The “titanic” director, Julia Ducournau, looked like the president of the jury, who was clearly uncomfortable with everything, but all but angry. When he handed out the award, he thanked Lee and praised him.
American actor Caleb Landry Jones (31) was voted best male actor at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in the Australian film “Nitram” by Justin Kurzel (46). This year’s best female actress is Renate Reinsve (33) from Norway. He starred in the Norwegian film “The Worst Person in the World” by Joachim Trier (47).
