Villarreal imposed a 0-0 draw on their host, and deprived him of the opportunity to lead Spanish first division football by five points, in the match held on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s side maintained the lead with 17 points from seven games, three points behind Atlético de Madrid, who today unexpectedly lost 1-0 against Alaves.
In a game with few chances, both teams lacked the accuracy of the final touch, and Arno Danjuma was about to score for the visiting team on two occasions, with a chance in each half, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois he intervened in a distinctive way.
The real defender, Eder Militao, finished off the ball in the goal after a free kick by his teammate Marco Asensio.
Isco and Vinicius Junior also tried to score, but Villarreal goalkeeper Jeronimo Rulli kept Unai Emery’s side with a point.
