The magnetic field of the sun is 10 times stronger than it was believed, and finds a study that can modify the understanding of the processes that occur in the immediate atmosphere of the sun.

The study found that the crown of the sun extends millions of kilometers above the surface, measuring 1.400,000 kilometers to the other, 109 times larger than Earth and 150,000,000 kilometers of Earth .

"Everything that happens in the outer atmosphere of the sun is dominated by the magnetic field, but we have very few measurements of its strength and spatial characteristics," David Kuridze, a research student at Aberystwyth University.

Using the 1 m Swedish solar telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Kuridze studied a particularly strong solar eruption that exploded on the sun's surface on September 10, 2017.

Solar eruptions appear as bright flashes and occur when suddenly released the magnetic energy that has accumulated in the solar atmosphere.

"This is the first time we have been able to accurately measure the magnetic field of the coronal loops, the basic elements of the magnetic crown of the sun, which have a level of precision," said Kuridze.

So far, the satisfactory measurement of the magnetic field has been hampered by the weakness of the signal coming from the sun's atmosphere that reaches the Earth and provides information on the magnetic field and the limitations of the instrumentation available.

The magnetic fields reported in the study are similar to those of a typical magnetic magnet and around 100 times weaker than the magnetic field found in a magnetic resonance scanner.

However, they are still responsible for the confinement of solar plasma, which accounts for solar eruptions, up to 20,000 km above the surface of the sun.

These solar eruptions can cause storms that, if they reach Earth, form the northern lights: the Aurora Borealis.

They can also interrupt communications satellites and GPS systems, the researchers said.
