Regenerative braking is a fairly great technology, and it's definitely working to increase the range of an electric vehicle, but is it enough to charge the EV itself? One intrepid IouTuber wanted to find out, so in the recently published video he decided to model his 3 with another car.
In case you do not know how regenerative braking works, it basically uses wheel starting to rotate the armatures inside the electric motor to generate electricity. In essence, the converter of your drive motor EV becomes a major alternator. In theory, this should allow the driver to use the towing bar to pull out his electric vehicle and put a little charge into his battery.
In this case, Matt from the Tech Forum channel used the 2013 Ford C-Mak Energi to make the model 3 even more uniformsoftware around a small residential loop at a speed of about 20 miles per hour. Tesla was dragged for 1 mile, and then he could do another 10 miles of a similar ride before he gave up and drove home, so it was noted that there was little left over in the bank.
On the surface, this is a pretty impressive feat, but when you think you should have another vehicle that could get you out, this is obviously not a very effective way to charge EV regularly. It is also important to note that the Matt's Battery Model 3 was already in a relatively high state to start. This process most likely will not work if your car is completely dead, and maybe it is less efficient with more disposable packaging.
Still, it's pretty cool.
