MediaTek unveiled the new chipsets called Dimensity 1200 and 1100, which will presumably be intended to equip future 5G smartphones ready to debut in the market in the coming months. A bit like what happened with Qualcomm and its new Snapdragon 870, even in this case, it would be more of an upgrade to the SoC Dimensity 1000 Plus, seen last year, than a new real processor. The production process has also remained the same, ie the 6 nm offered by TSMC.

The Dimensity 1200 still represents the most powerful solution, thanks to the presence of a Cortex-A78 core with a clock frequency of up to 3GHz, along with three other Cortex-A78 cores with a frequency of up to 2.6GHz. On the other hand, the new Dimensity 1100 chip loses its primary core, offering four Cortex-A78 cores with a frequency of up to 2.6GHz, in addition to four Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of up to 2.0GHz.
As for the GPU
That is, the graphics processing unit, both the Dimensity 1100 and 1200 contain a nine-core ARM Mali-G77, with support for the system developed for gaming and called HyperEngine 3.0 manufactured by MediaTek. The new flagship SoC is capable of supporting displays with a maximum refresh rate of 168Hz and an FHD + resolution or, alternatively, stops at 90Hz for QHD + panels. The Dimensity 1100 achieves an refresh rate of up to 144Hz with FHD + resolution and 90Hz with QHD +, but in both cases there is support for HDR10 + video playback.
Moving on to the photographic sector
The Dimensity 1200 is able to offer the best performance, whether it supports single image sensors up to 200 Mpx or dual image sensors up to 32 Mpx + 16 Mpx thanks to the implementation of an ISP (image sensor ), penta- nuclei. The Dimensity 1100 supports “only” single image sensors up to 108 Mpx or dual image sensors up to 32 Mpx + 16 Mpx.
Very important note
Both chip sets include support for 5G connectivity on the FDD and TDD spectrum, as well as the ability to use 5G to dual SIM. It also has support for Bluetooth 5.2, along with the ability to capture 4K HDR video with higher dynamic range.
From a performance standpoint, MediaTek claims that the Dimensity 1200 should be about 10% faster than the Dimensity 1100 thanks to the presence of the much more powerful Cortex-A78. Finally, we find a new hexa-core processor dedicated to AI MediaTek APU 3.0 designed to offer an improved task scheduler, designed to reduce latency and reduce power consumption.
The first devices equipped with Dimensity 1200 and 1100 chipsets should be launched in the first quarter of 2021
The first manufacturers to benefit could be Realme, Oppo, Viu and Xiaomi. Not surprisingly, MediaTek has launched a closed-door campaign against Qualcomm’s dominance in the smartphone chipset market. Even if the Chinese manufacturer does not provide its solutions to the range limit devices of the various most popular brands, including Samsung, Google, LG or OnePlus, at least in the initial phase, the new Dimensity processors will be offered as an alternative valid for those who decide to launch new mid-range devices with a view to costs.
